A few years back I asked a romance cover artist to make a fantasy portrait of my wife and I. The image was great, but it took a few iterations to get away from the book format (tall rectangle, space for a title). We ended up with a nearly square image which turned out very well.
Arrrgh, I love so many covers it's hard to pick! Giskard has always been a favorite but Explorer catches my eye. And Foreigner. And Friday and all the Pern dragons. As I started to type this, it initially came out as Arrfff. I think Lola is trying to tell me something! Glad she is thriving
Goodness, I'm always shocked to scroll through these posts and go *I remember those books!* In many cases, I read them just because of the cover art. There was a whole trilogy I read because book 3 had the best cover I'd ever seen. Not sure if it was yours or not? It was the third book of Robin Hobb's Golden Fool trilogy (I think that's the title), with a dragon frozen in a wall of ice.
Just sent over my mailing address—really looking forward to whatever you’re putting together. I’ve always admired Michael's work, but getting a peek behind the curtain through these updates—the sketches, the thought process, all of it—has made me appreciate it even more.
Also, so glad to hear Lola’s living her best life these days. From under the bridge to queen of the park—so awesome and lovely for her, she deserves every bit of warmth, love and attention she can get..
Right off the top of my head, I'd say Skybowl is my favorite cover. It's so dramatic and the colors so intense. Also the covers of, particularly the early, Dragon Riders books, have a powerful emotional effect on me when I see them, because the books were so influential in my early SF reading days. I pretty much became an avid reader because of those books.
I love covers for Banks and Asimov works and The Firestarter, and the Gunslinger are so true to the feelings the books convey, but the Way of Kings is my number 1 so far, slightly going ahead of the Dark Tower, if in tWoK Sanderson's name was half of what it is now, the cover would only be better in my opinion. The composition, the colour's and the atmosphere of this cover is something I wake up in the morning and look into almost every day, literally. The Dark Tower would be my number one if I considered my love for Roland's character only. My number 3 would be A Memory of Light by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson.

Love the insight into the behind the scenes thoughts to make these covers come together.
And that is a good stick, very discerning taste from Lola.
