Michael's version of the Mule is my favorite version. When I first saw it many years ago, I had a shock: so realistic, so faithful to the books, but also with a personal touch.
I am happy that my favorite Foundation character got such an amazing fanart.
Even though the Mule is described as stirring derision, or even ugly, when I read the books I never considered him as such. And it seems neither did Michael! Because in this fanart I see someone weird, but totally likeable. Beauty is subjective.
I wish there were more pieces of the Mule by Michael Whelan.
I know everybody will have their personal favorites, but for me Whelan’s pieces for Asimov’s books are the most entrancing. Capturing some of the most important moments in stories that encompass centuries. I only wish that there were more moments that I could marvel at.
Here Michael has perfectly portrayed how easily the Mule could be overlooked by those who had no clue as to his galaxy spanning powers.

I love seeing the preliminary stages of the artwork and the changes along the way.
That's beautiful.
