I don't know where I first saw this image, but it's long been what I see for that scene. I was thrilled when the scene in the movie was almost exactly this.
It was first published in the Tolkien calendar then later collected in my second art book MICHAEL WHELAN'S WORKS OF WONDER. Also more recently in BEYOND SCIENCE FICTION as it was part of the Riverside retrospective.
This one makes my heart so glad. Just recently re-watching the films at the movie theater, I am struck by how much Jackson's scene seems to have drawn from your envisioning.
I vividly remember buying and enjoying this calendar and this amazing illustration. It has lived in my memory for decades and is how I picture the scene when I read it to this day
