Pol was depicted on the cover of Skybowl looking much younger, so I really don't think it was him. I'm fairly certain it is Sioned because of the emotion on her face. The most cover worthy moment for a character at that point would have been hers, and her emotion is consistent with that event.
It's been 30 years since I read the books, but I felt strongly at the time that it was Chay who whisked Sioned away and kept her going.
I always thought it was supposed to be Pol and Meiglan. Now I'm curious too! Lol

Ah. I love those books. They can be hard, because bad things happen to characters you like but they are such great stories.
