Elric of Melniboné

In black armor and dragon helm, Elric perches on the high limb of a dead tree rising out of a charred wasteland. With his left hand, he plants a dagger into the adjacent branch, which is splintered and broken off. A booted foot dangles along the curving, barren trunk. Mushroom grow out the opposite side like a series of shelves. Elric's other leg crosses in front of him running along the branch he's seated upon. His foot is propped gracefully on opposite knee maintaining an easy balance. His palm rests on the dome a skull set on his leg. His fingers cover one orbital. Threaded under his arm and across his lap, a black spear dips downward with a necklace strung just above the long, jagged head. A citrine weighs down the chain. Stormbringer is slung sheathed on Elric's back. Touches of blue set off the gems of his scabbard and the jewels strung across his chest. — Untitled painting featuring Michael Moorcock’s Elric of Melnibone

Some characters stay with you over the long arc of a career. Such is the case with Michael Moorcock's tragic anti-hero. I painted this untitled Elric piece back in 1992.
