A problem in choosing the image for this cover was that the heroine is consistently portrayed as being drab and uninteresting. Yet uninteresting is the last thing a book cover should be!
To combat this, I faced her away from the light and contrasted the dreariness of her life with the promise of her future, represented by the stained glass window. There a dragon is fixed in the shape of a heart, the centerpoint of her soul's desire.
This is one of my last paintings on masonite, a hard and "unsympathetic" material to paint on, which was largely replaced in my studio by canvas and watercolor board.

This is stunning. We can feel the sunlight through the glass.
How did you get translucence and opacity in the same image? Truly miraculous. Thank you -- and, as always, we love knowing the background facts.
My absolute favorite cover. Something about the stained glass just hits me. I hope someday I can get a print!
