As with OPEN, I was working to establish the connecting points between my Passage paintings and this new series, before I went on to define the new themes in their entirety.

This reminds me of the Turf houses on Iceland. A building method going back to Viking times.
Wide is another signal painting that I so wish was in my collection. Michael’s extraordinary attention to detail is in overdrive here. If you expand the graphic image you can see the amazing but subtle use of coloration in the sky. The way that sunlight is allowed through the clouds backlights everything and places the two door mounds in shadows while allowing brilliant green in the background. Again MW invites the viewer to speculate on what is being portrayed. The closed doors have no images or writings unlike the opened doors. What significance is attached to the number? Does the downward triangle suggest entering the unknown depths? Is the candle globe entering or leaving through the open door? I have often felt that the fact that of the 4 doors, the fact that only 1 is open points out that in life, all doors are not always open.
I have always enjoyed comparing this one to Open where the same type of green mound is present but the openings are completely different in that Open has an open portal without any doors.
Anyway, Wide is a really special painting!
