In a recent attempt to clean up my studio, I found a color study of crystals done for RHYTHM OF WAR. The obvious direction would have been to add a Stormlight character, but I didn't think about that. I hadn’t painted a spaceship in far too long and felt the pull of the stars.

About Leftovers & Palette Gremlins

Leftovers are spur-of-the-moment doodles or sketches created with paint left over from a work in progress. (Ever since my poor art student days, I’ve been loathe to discard any usable paint or other art materials!) Many of these quickies end up in the trash, but some give rise to an idea that merits development into a full sized painting.

Palette Gremlins are small creations inspired by random or accidental shapes in my immediate environment. Usually these gremlins are found on a used palette, but nearly as often they spring from an unintentional mark of paint on a piece of paper or a suggestive shadow in my studio.

WIND AND TRUTH AVAILABLE NOW!

Dalinar stands atop the tower of Urithiru with his hand thrust out toward a massive storm that forms a tight spiral of purple and blue clouds. At the outer edge of the spiral turbulent clouds give way to pale blue sky barely visible over the tall peaks. Forks of lightning stab at the mountains that fill the vista. In the sky beyond the storm, clouds seem to unravel in loose waves, dark orange over a warm yellow sunset. Ice forms on the top of the tower, the surface shining as it catches light. On the perimeter, a low railing connects supports topped with colorful spheres that represent the orders of the Knights Radiant. Below the roof, thin classical columns form a ring around the tower. The ridge intersects the tower in the foreground left. Alien life pokes through the snowy slope with tall onion like buds, iridescent purple and green. — Signed Open Edition Giclée, (18” x 24”) **$60** and (24” x 36”) **$100**

Love it! Reminds my husband and I of the Kristine Kathryn Rusch's Diving the Wreck series. This would have been a fantastic cover for that. Not that you're doing covers much, lol. And the cover artist for that series, Dave Seeley, is pretty darned good.
