I was in a frenzied state trying to finish up jobs before the impending birth of our son when I had a dream about this cover. The trees came to me exactly as you see here and I worked the rest of the cover design around them. Luckily Anne McCaffrey liked them too and she bought the original.

Love Anne McCaffery’ s work. The art work reminds me a lot of Hipgnosis album covers for Yes! Chicken or the egg?
I was unfamiliar with Anne McCaffrey as an author until I saw the cover for Renegades of Pern. It captivated my imagination with its incredible rendering of an alien landscape in which humans were trodding. I went back and slowly got the entire series. One of many authors that but for a MW cover, I might never have discovered. I have a nice triptych of this particular piece consisting of an artist proof print, the grey and white Preliminary shown in the post, and a 14” x 19” pencil detail of the wagon area of the final painting. The pencil detail is very close to the tan and brown Preliminary shown in the post.
