THE GUNSLINGER FOLLOWED
Illustration for The Little Sisters of Eluria by Stephen King

The second painting based on the famous opening line of The Dark Tower books by Stephen King: "The Man in Black fled across the desert and the Gunslinger followed."
Roland and the Man in Black don't come in sight of each other until they're out of the desert, so I split the line into two paintings. This is the closest I've come to what I think Roland looks like—dogged, grim, with an indomitable sense of mission.
A composite of the two paintings were used for the cover of The Little Sisters of Eluria, an updated edition of The Gunslinger published by Donald M. Grant.

I always thought that was one of the greatest opening lines in literature, and I love seeing it illustrated.
I'm going to have to read that series. The paintings are very interesting.
