This take on the court magician of Gilead, advisor to Steven Deschain, and major villain in disguise was one of many “remarques” done to accompany Knowing Darkness: Artists Inspired by Stephen King, a definition collection of art spanning the author’s career to that point.
They were never true remarques drawn directly on the page of the book. The art was included loose, suitable for framing. In this case, the charcoal pencil drawing was executed on watercolor paper splashed with red tinted acrylic.
The paper was an enjoyable surface to work on. I had extra that I didn’t use right away, and whenever I opened that drawer I would decide on a whim to do a piece like UNMASKED or THE TOWER CARD. They’re similar in style but not part of the same project.
