Today we have two originals, a preliminary concept and a finished study that Michael completed during his work on a cover for a forthcoming special edition of At the Mountains of Madness by H.P. Lovecraft from Centipede Press.

FEARFUL GEOMETRY
Finished study for AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS
Acrylic on Panel - 8” x 8”
An attempt to visualize one of the green star-shaped artifacts as faithfully to Lovecraft’s text as possible. This was intended to serve as a model for later use in the cover painting.
Ultimately Michael decided on a slightly different set of patterns on the stone depicted on the cover, but he saw promise in this illustration, a small gem in its own right, and elected to finish it.

BLIZZARD OF FEAR
Preliminary concept for AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS
Oil on Board - 11” x 14”
A figure study for H.P. Lovecraft's master work At the Mountains of Madness. It began with a search for a pose and evolved into a complete scene.
The Antarctic explorer grips one of the strange green “star stone” artifacts while a Shoggoth lurks in the background.
Michael ultimately went in a different direction, but he liked this well enough that it has been hanging in his studio for several years.
