The painting was executed in a technique that layered brilliant colors, with the top layer partially obscuring the lower ones.

It is always interesting to me to examine the ground in any MW painting for interesting artifacts. Here we have RAH turning his back on his past and looking forward to what is next. I am having some difficulty in identifying the left behind items. The Hugo is pretty clear as are the stacks of manuscript pages. The paperback looks like Red Planet, the hardcover could be anything but I am guessing To Sail Beyond Sunset since it was his last novel to be published prior to his death? In the foreground there is the circular bottom of something tipped over and a stick-like object. A pen and inkwell to show how long he had been writing?
I really appreciate the way the portal, which was so prominent in one of the preliminaries is preserved in the finished painting albeit greatly reduced in size to show a vast distance to it in the foreground!
Having grown up devouring every published RAH work, the MW covers were always a special treat. It would be hard to imagine a more fitting portrait of and tribute to RAH than the painting shown here!!!!!
