This began with leftover paint smooshed with a palette knife onto canvas that I was mixing colors on. The orange and black immediately suggested a campfire.
When I stumbled on the scrap a year later, I thought of The Dark Tower, so I rescued the canvas and sketched in Roland with paint that I had on hand.
Later still—last week, actually!—I saw a potential scene from book 7. The line “It writhed in the embers” describes when Roland finally disposes of the spider-thing Mordred.

IT WRITHED IN THE EMBERS
Acrylic on Canvas - 7” x 10”
The inspiration for this came from paint patterns found in the studio and a line from The Dark Tower (Book 7). Stephen King wrote, "It writhed in the embers…" describing when Roland finally disposes of Mordred, depicted one last time in its spider form.
This small original painting is available in our shop for as long as it lasts!

About Leftovers & Palette Gremlins
Leftovers are spur-of-the-moment doodles or sketches created with paint left over from a work in progress. (Ever since my poor art student days, I’ve been loathe to discard any usable paint or other art materials!) Many of these quickies end up in the trash, but some give rise to an idea that merits development into a full sized painting.
Palette Gremlins are small creations inspired by random or accidental shapes in my immediate environment. Usually these gremlins are found on a used palette, but nearly as often they spring from an unintentional mark of paint on a piece of paper or a suggestive shadow in my studio.

Beautiful art, gone in a blink.
Absolutely gorgeous. I missed out on another Michael Whelan based art on Stephen Kings "the waste lands". I love it. Thanks for sharing
