Foreigner is a novel of first contact by C.J. Cherryh.
Two hundred years ago, a spaceship dropped out of hyperspace at the wrong destination. The human colonists find the planet below inhabited by a race advanced only to the level of steam-engine technology.
The strength of the story is the contrast of alien psychology and culture as seen through the eyes of the one human who fluently speaks their language.
The author translates detailed research into immersive realism, showcasing a depth of worldbuilding rarely seen. That’s why she has earned comparisons to legends like J.R.R. Tolkien and Gene Wolfe.
FOREIGNER was the first of four covers I illustrated for the series that currently stands at 22 books, written over a span of 30 years. Quite an achievement!
