Acrylic - 12” x 24”
Outwardly a whimsical painting based solely on a young girl trailing a flight of butterflies, but the arid background tells a more somber story. She glides past echoes of past extinction events oblivious to her setting, a land that no longer supports life.
Michael Whelan wrestles with familiar themes of an uncertain future under the threat of climate collapse in this brilliant new gallery painting.

So wonderful. I love how the balloon is a perfect choice for a carefree child, while evoking a view of our watery planet from space AND calling out the one-time use plastic culture that is a symptom of everything that has brought us to this point, and is likely to be our legacy on the planet, our footprints.
I love this piece, Michael! So great to see you still producing at such a high level.
