
The idea is that in the space behind the door there’s a firefight or some sort of trouble going on, and the heroine is trying to “keep a door closed” to the tumult, so to speak.
In the novel, Pyanfar is beset by tactical and political difficulties, which she is ever trying to contain. The action of the pose seemed to appropriately symbolize that.
This was one of my earliest “traffic graphics” paintings. I started to include graphic elements seen on road signs or elsewhere as a way to attract attention to the cover. I tilted the vantage point to offset any verticals, again, to add interest.
