There’s a long tradition of death symbols in art—like the skull on the canopy of leaves here—invoked as “memento mori.” The phrase translates to “remember to die,” but more accurately the symbols serve as reminder of the brevity of existence.
The tilted egg represents the fragility of life while the skull symbolizes the inevitability of death. In between, we must find balance in life.
