AT THE EDGE

A trio riding horses emerges from a sandy haze. The foremost figure rests the pommel of his wooden sword on the neck of his mount. The tip points straight up piercing the side of a sun that barely burns through the fog. Each wide quillon angles up slightly ending with a simple flower. The man is blonde, bearded, and weary. The strap of the reins lies across the hand gripping the sword. His other arm is obscured by the black cloak he wears. His horse angles its head to the left giving the impression that it is guiding itself. — AT THE EDGE (1988), Acrylic on Watercolor Board - 30" x 22"

This was a commission for DAW based on an outline, but something happened to the author and he never finished the manuscript, so I guess you could say it’s an orphaned painting, forever waiting for a book.

The ‘sword’ held by the main figure is supposed to be made of wood.
