I have always felt that the pensive figure never attains either confinement or security. It appears she is free to leave at any time by the same route by the central position was gained so is she truly confined? Likewise, the apparently open access also suggests her position is anything but secure since anyone could follow the same route to the central position. Thus asylum, under either meaning, isn’t real and that is what she is pondering. Anyway that is how I have viewed it!
